Advice for Writers, Part 2
As a new writer the amount of things you need to learn can feel overwhelming. I imagine as a seasoned writer, the learning continues, for all time. So, I wanted to write a little bit about some of the best resources I have found for the foundation of writing an excellent novel.
You probably already know this about me: I work a 9-5 job as an engineer, and I have two kids with activities (all fun!). So this should not come as a surprise, but I find time to write in the wee hours of the evening, early hours of the morning, and time in between activities. So, how do I find time to improve my craft and get any writing done?
Podcasts!
They are such a powerful tool for learning on the go (or while doing the dishes) and I want to share one of the best ones I have found on writing craft, and the journey of being a writer itself:
'Helping Writers Become Authors' by K.M. Weiland
I have found K.M. Weiland's podcasts (and I have listened to them all!) insightful, thought-provoking, and informative. I have grown so much as a new writer, and I feel that this resource is far above any else I have encountered (even as a pantser, these resources really help solidify my instincts of storytelling).
I also have two of her books queued in my TBR: (1) Second Edition of Structuring Your Novel, and (2) Next Level Plot Structure. I have the paperback versions, but with my schedule, maybe these next reads will be an audiobook adventure!
So, if you are new to the game of writing, hoping to brush up on your skills, or just curious about the craft of writing, I hope these resources help you as much as they have me.
